Did you know you are threatening the environment by forgetting to turn off the lights, overcharging your phone or using a high-powered air conditioner?

Our planet uses up 15 terawatts (1.504×1013 W) of energy per year. Wasting electricity contributes to the intimidating greenhouse effect, as fossil fuels, the main source of electricity gives off carbon dioxide.

What a number of organizations are proposing is that we go green, not only in terms of ecological conservation but also with the buildings as 40 percent of energy consumption is eaten up by these structures. There are now green buildings which have been designed with cost-effective and ecologically-aware resources, thus making a positive effect on the environment.

One of the means utilized by these green buildings is energy efficient cooling systems like those presented by Concepcion-Carrier in the market today. Concepcion Carrier calls these the green cooling solutions, the Carrier XPower Inverter, the Carrier Evergreen 23XRV chiller, and the Toshiba-Carrier SMMSi. These products effectively lower electricity consumption.

“We know that air-conditioning and refrigerating systems require energy. We offer an industry leading energy-sufficient-solution products and services to our customers. Solutions that our customers could bring help in the environment as well as reduce electrical expenses,” says Raul Joseph Concepcion, chief executive officer of Concepcion Carrier Air Conditioning.

The Carrier XPower Inverter, uses an non-ozone depleting, chlorine-free R-410a refrigerant and saves up to 53 percent more electricity versus other leading inverters. The Carrier Evergreen 23XRV is the world’s first integrated variable-speed, water-cooled screw chiller. Compared to other typical chillers, the Carrier 23XRV has 15-30 percent better part load efficiency. The Toshiba-Carrier SMMSi is a first class air-conditioning technology and the most advanced inverter or variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system for large buildings that is 30 percent more energy efficient than conventional VRF inverters.

In case you didn’t know, there are green buildings here in the country; in fact there is even a council which presides over them. The Philippine Green Building Council corporate communications manager, Chester dela Cruz, shares, ‘the Philippines being a developing country is vulnerable to the effects in climate change. That is why we are promoting buildings as a solution to the climate change crisis.”

“Why buildings as a solution,” dela Cruz asks. “We see the environmental and economical impact of building and construction industry globally. Thirty to 40 per cent of the green house emissions are coming from this sector and about 40 percent of energy use worldwide. Green buildings are structures which are designed, built, renovated, or operated in an ecologically-resourced efficient manner.”

James Cameron's Avatar in the Amazons

The Amazon river according to wikipedia is the largest river (Nile River is the Longest) in the world with a total river flow greater than the next ten largest rivers combined. The Amazon, which has the largest drainage basin in the world, accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flowthen a dam project comes over.

Director James Cameron said Monday that a real-life "Avatar" battle is playing out in Brazil's Amazon rain forest (the largest rain forest and most species rich tract of land), where indigenous groups are trying to halt the construction of a huge hydroelectric project.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Cameron said he was in Brazil's capital to support Indian and environmental groups as they stage protests against the Belo Monte dam project.

"I'm drawn into a situation where a real-life 'Avatar' confrontation is in progress," Cameron said in a telephone interview while en route to protests taking place in front of the Mines and Energy Ministry.

"What's happening in 'Avatar' is happening in Brazil and places like India and China, where traditional villages are displaced by big infrastructure projects," he added.

The $11 billion Belo Monte hydroelectric dam — which if completed would be the world's third-largest such project — was cleared for construction Feb. 1 by the Environment Ministry. Bidding for prospective builders is expected to take place later this month.

Brazil's government has said that even if it can't find private partners for the dam's construction on the Xingu River, which feeds the Amazon River, the nation has the funds to finish the project itself.

The administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva argues that the dam will provide clean energy and is needed to meet current and future energy needs.

Environmentalists are sharply opposed. They say it will devastate wildlife and the livelihoods of 40,000 people who live in the area to be flooded. They also argue that the energy generated by the dam will largely go to big mining operations in the Amazon, not benefit the average person. - from yahoo

Yup, not to benefit the average person but only their pockets, hope these guys will think this through, what will happen to our earth?

We are bringing upon ourselves our very own extinction. We our inflicting a punishment to this Earth that it does not.even deserve. We have long been cared for our home yet we repay it with its own destruction.

Sea Dries Up

Once the world's fourth-largest lake, the Aral sea has shrunk by 90 percent since the rivers that feed it were largely diverted in a Soviet project to boost cotton production in the arid region.

The drying up of the Aral Sea is one of the planet's most shocking environmental disasters.

Progress is killing us. Soon our extinction shall be brought upon by our own actions.

I remember last year,. i don't know maybe the word wasn't spread that much but hey hopefully this year it would be more successful.
