No Other Woman and When the Love is Gone revivals of Pinoy Classics

I haven't yet seen Viva Entertainment's newest outing, When the Love is Gone, but I just found a good trivia about the movie. Apparently it is a remake of the late director Danny Zialcita's classic film of love lost, gained and betrayed
.
Winner ang title ng original film: Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi. O diba? Zialcits's film stars Gloria Diaz, Janice de Belen, Eddie Garcia, Dindo Fernando, and Laurice Guillen.

Click on the video, to see some scenes from the original, as well as from the new movie.

Talking about revival films, did you know that box-office hit No Other Woman is a revival as well. It is adapted from another Zialcita work, titled Langis at Tubig.

PI think it is good that Viva is doing this, reviving old classics. Pay tribute to these classics, especially now that the movie industry is leaning towards baduy(hahahha) comedy films.

On the job will film in Hollywood, will Gerald Anderson and Piolo Pascual get parts?

It is confirmed!

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the celebrated, yet box-office disappointment, On the Job.

The question here is will the new director/screenwriter/producer Baltasar Kolmakur give parts to the Filipino leads, say Gerald Anderson and Piolo Pascual; the way Iza Calzado scored a Hollywood deal when the Yam Lamares' film Sigaw was remade in the US (the Echo).

Hmm, we can only wait and see. after all, Kolmakur did say that he had been developing the stiry even before OTJ begun production Tsk! Tsk!

Universal Options on the Job

Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to crime thriller “On the Job,” withBaltasar Kormakur on board to write and direct and Scott Stuber on board to produce.
Kormakur will also produce for his RVK Studios while Stuber will produce through his Universal-based Bluegrass Films banner. XYZ Films partners Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian will also produce.
While some inspiration for the concept came from Erik Matti’s Filipino movie “On The Job,” Kormakur actually had already begun developing a project based on the same events as “On The Job” with XYZ Films before the Filipino film began production.
The pic is based on the real-life scandal where prison inmates were temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officials.
XYZ Films handled worldwide sales and the film is now in release through Well Go USA in North America. It premiered at Cannes this year in the Directors Fortnight.
The remake and Kormakur’s involvement were reported this summer, but at the time the film didn’t have a studio to call home.
Nick Nesbitt, who brought the project in to Bluegrass Films, will oversee the project. Kyle Franke will oversee on behalf of XYZ Films while Universal’s vice president of production Anikah McLaren will oversee on behalf of the studio.
Universal and Kormakur have already seen good returns with “Contraband” and “2 Guns” and teaming him up with one of the studio’s top producers could lead to even bigger results.
Kormakur has been busy developing several projects including the Working Title pic “Everest” starring Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal. Stuber has seen big results on the comedy end with “Ted” and “Identity Thief.”
His action thriller “Safe House,” which could have similarities to “On the Job,” also hit big making more than $200 million worldwide.
XYZ Films and CAA co-brokered the underlying rights deal with Universal on behalf of the producers of On The Job.
Kormakur is repped by WME and attorney Peter Nelson. Matti is represented by CAA and attorney Chris Spicer.

No Other Woman (review)

The story has been told more than a thousand times, happened in the real world more than a million times, yet this movie gives it a unique kick that makes it worth watching. What more the stars give it a different twist. Though hunky Derek just have to be himself, the sexy star Chrisitne Reyes plays the angelic perfect wife while the ever bubbly Anne Curtis is the mistress. It's the perfect of kind of miscasting. They do pull it off really well, peppered with punchy one liners that would surely be quoted for years to come.

Kudos as well to Carmi Martin, as the Nouveau rich mudrabells of Christine reyes, who completes the movie.

Some Like You (review)

Nope this is not a review of Adele's famous song, which I love by the way, but of a movie released in 2001 with the same title that stars Ashley Judd, Greg Kinnear and Hugh Jackman.

It is not just about the usual romance, nor the comedy, but what we get from the plot. I believe some of us know of it already, but often times we needed to be reminded.

You would think that Jane Goodale (Judd) has everything going for her. She is a talent scout in a popular talk show which has recently gone nationwide and their new dashing executive producer, Rey (Kinnear) has her asked out. What makes her life more unbelievable is that Rey has said I love you only after six weeks, and has asked her to play house with him.

After picking out the right apartment, wanting to sign the contracts and having her current place rerented, Rey suddenly backs out, not answering any of Jane's calls

Enter womanizing colleague Eddie, who had asked Jane once before if she would think about being his roommate, and there right in front of Rey, Jane says she will move in with Eddie.

Jane then now has a new place to live, and also a hobby to pursue on which is why men are the way they are. Apparantly, less than five pecernt of the male species are monogamous. And she also come up with a theory called the new cow. A bull makes love to a cow only once. Even if that cow's smell may change, the bull knows who that is.

Her bestfriend Liz turns this hobby in to a living by proposing she becomes a columnist in the men's magazine that she is working for. Jane then becomes an overnight sensation, with the penname Dr. Charles.

Not knowing of her journalistic success, Rey tries to make peace with her.

Jane is a cynic, and with all her cynic ways she then finds out that not all men are alike. As clicheish as it may sound. You can find the nicest guy in the unexpected places---like in a hospital room, telling his wife how beautiful she is even after an accident.

I did get to watch this great film in the movie house and I have it on VCD. I recommended it on my friend who is still hung of on her ex, and I do hope that she did get to learn a thing or two from this flick.

Horrible Bosses (review)

Admittedly, I am a Jen Aniston Fan. So, I have been waiting for this movie ever since IMDB said pre-production. Even more so, when it had gotten good reviews from the critics, and Jen receiving praises for her performance.

But this movie is not just all about Jen, who plays Dentist Julia Harris. This movie also features Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis, Charlie Day, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx.Horrible Bosses as the title implies is all about three friends (the two Jasons and Charlie Day) who have bosses (Jen, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell) making their life miserable. So they plot out to kill their bosses. They look in the internet for murderers. Then they go to a bar, where eventually they find a murder consultant ( Jamie Foxx).

So do they succeed in ending their misery? You have to watch the movie and find out for yourself. I swear you'll have your money's worth just laughing off at these three guys antics and what happened to them.
As for Jen, I can understand why it was such a positive response. It was a new character fo her. No only because oof the dark hair, but also the way she played it, You would see her in wearing nothing but her panties and her lab coat. I do wish that she would do more movies like this, well not exactly playing a maneater, but more of those which are outside her comfort zone.

I do hope that Wanderlust, the one that she is shooting with her boyfriend Justin Theroux would be as good or even better than Horrible Bosses.

Friends with Benefits (review)

Some may think that this might be a rip-off of the Ashton Kutcher-Natalie Portman starrer as it involves two friends casually having sex, no strings attached, ehem. The main story line might be similar, but how the plot and the story runs are completely different.

Dylan (Justin Timberlake) is a top art director who is headhunted by Jamie (Mila Kunis) to work for GQ in New York. Being new in the city, the only friend he has is Jamie. They somehow agree on having a relationship based on friendship and sex, without comprising and overlooking the former. To the point that they even went out with other people.the chemistry between the two leads give the movie a whole different twist. The Ashton movie involves him having feelings from the start with Natalie, however, the two leads here only realize their emotions after a series of events.

Patricia Clarkson, Jamie's mom is a delight. I've first noticed her in Easy A, where she took on another mother role, but hey, this is another mom role, where in she is a whole different person. She makes you guessing (or maybe not) and laughing on who Jamie's father really is.

The on going plotlines of friends casually having sex, only reflects on how today's society works. Somehow, it is like that. There are people who operate like that who do not have that five date rule and would call on a friend when he or she is in need of a good time. Well, this may not be the first time this happened, as one character commented, 'this is like the 70's'. Free love.

One Day (Review)

This is the story of a boy and a girl, Dexter and Emma, who after graduation met, had an intimate time, but then decided to be friends, or to be more exact the best of friends. Scenes are shown through out the film centering on the improvement or the pitfalls of the two leads in one day (July 15th) for every year since that day they met.

Since the poster clearly suggests it to be a romance, me as an audience would always wonder when would they get together? Would it be when they vacationed, just the two of them? They went skinny-dipping. Would it be when Dex's (Jim Sturgess) career hit a snag?
When the two leads do get together, it somehow made me think that it is for ever after. Well, that's what my friend thought and she quickly commented," that's it, corny."
But then, it does not end with the big kiss. All there is a foreshadowing of things to come, but still an awfully big surprise of how things end up with Emma (Anne Hathaway, who played the part British).

I guess somehow, the movie gave me a few realizations of my own, that cliche-sh time is gold. Apparently, love does figure in that age old saying. No one wants to be lonely, maybe that's why sometimes we pretend to be happy--with ourselves, or even with someone. But the at the end of it, we are yearning for something else. You may never know it, but the one who's meant for you maybe your bestfriend and you might be taking him or her for granted.

Colombiana (Review)

A young girl, Cataleya ,who once wanted to be like Xena, warrior princess has a change of dream to a killer when she witnesses her father and mother murdered. Zoe Saldana played this role beautifully. I always thought that she is African-American. Then Cataleya is Colombian which got me to thinking what her ethnicity really might be. It turns out she's perfect to play a Latin American. Her dad is Dominican while her mom is Puerto Rican. All throughout Zoe oozes charm with minimal makeup (just dark eyeshadow) and her natural beauty stands out.

This isn't your usual hitman for hire movie. The trauma of how Cataleya could not live to get close to any body even her boyfriend (played by Michael Vartan) was shown. Michael Vartan's age is also evident (although probably not intended), as the guy isn't as hot as before (Monster-in-Law, Alias).

Cataleya, seeks the help of the US embassy in Columbia so that she gets her passport to the US. After reaching the US, Little Cataleya escapes the authority to her uncle in Chicago, and then grows up to be stone called assassin. The movie is filled with action sequences, that is played beautifully Although the last gun shooting scenes lacked impact. where and then out of nowhere was Cataleya in the back. The fight scenes and assassination sequence were better though. Inside a jail, she had to kill a conman eluding the police guards and the camera. Plus, she did not only use guns to kill. She used her wit, sharks to kill her prey.

Movie Review: Pirates, On Stranger Tides

A big fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, a big fan oof Legolas, but that doesn't mean I'm a big fan of Orlando Bloom. The departure of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann in this film franchise isn't at all a loss.

Instead it marks another adventure in my favorite characters from the movie , Captain Jack Sparrow (btw am a big fan of Johnny Depp, plus he deserves more credit for the films, he even got an Oscar Nomination)
Last Friday, I saw the new Pirates film, On Stranger Tides on IMAX. Me and my friends were able to catch the last full show that was why I was a bit tired and sleepy mostly because of work, but the fast pacing of the story was able to kick out the sleepy dust off my head. Of course, you wouldn't expect the same plot as before. The previous Pirates story already had a backbone with The Curse of the Black Pearl, Part 1 to lean on to. This is already another adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow with his friends Gibbs and (ehem) Captain Barbosa and ladylove Angelica (Penelope Cruz).

I think that the elements such as the love story between the mermaid and the missionary is a little off.

But me and my friends think that the story is somehow bitin, and probably because there is a sequel as is suggested by the clip after the credits.

Review: The Last Airbender

Coming from an avid viewer of the cartoon series Avatar: the legend of Aang, the last airbender, I am not pleased with the movie. But, I already knew that I'd be disappointed with the film adaptation, because of the casting and of course how limiting two hours can be as compared to a whole season.

I really have a big problem with the casting. Dev Patel as the Fire nation's Zuko, he's indian, the cartoon clearly draws him as Chinese. Couldn't they have just find a Chinese, Japanese or even Korean actor ro play Aang's arch enemy (that's all, I'm going to say first cause a line in the movie "we could be friends you know," Aang to Zuko is a dead giveaway of what's going to happen in the sequel.) They could have cast Korean-Actor Rain, who I believe already made a hollywood action film. Zuko is older than Aang. Plus, if they really wanted Dev Patel, he could have been perfect for the role of Sokka. Sokka in the cartoons is drawn similar to Dev's features. In defense of Jackson Rathbone (Twilight), i liked his performance, especially during the first parts when they were out hunting, I got some hints of Sokka's kookiness.

Another problem that I had with the movie was that the characters weren't given much personalities. I do remember that episode of when Katara was teaching Aang, but it didn't really show in the movie that she was jealous of him because he was learning faster than her, instead Aang pretended to not learn and was practicing only in night time. I wonder how they are going to make Aang like Katara, because he has a crush on her, but it was not an issue in the movie. Aang's pets, Appa and Momo did not have much parts in the movie, but at least they were brillaintly done and could very much compare to the original, "yip, yip!"

Plus , the Avatar state was tinkered with. The Avatar state is when Aang is most powerful and all elements---earth, air, water and fire are with him, this only happens when he is most angry, and when he is in the avatar state, he becomes helpless afterwards. In the movie, Aang was in the Avatar state when he was controlling the ocean trying to defeat the Fire Nation, and after he did so, he was okay.

Apart from that, i also have a problem with the execution as not much special effects and new tactics nad martial arts skills were used. I was watching in 3D,. DUH? What more it was all eery and dark, yes i know I was in the cinema, but then even the day scenes have a glint of being dark, I guess that must have been the director's signature? I would have really wanted the movie to be written by the original creators and not by the director, M. Night, but hey, that's just me, right?

Although, I am disappointed, i will still watch part two, book 2: earth, where another of my favorite character Toph, a 12 year old blind girl who is also Aang's Earth bending teacher will appear. oh yeah King Bumi, Aang's friend is awesome too.

James Cameron's Avatar in the Amazons

The Amazon river according to wikipedia is the largest river (Nile River is the Longest) in the world with a total river flow greater than the next ten largest rivers combined. The Amazon, which has the largest drainage basin in the world, accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flowthen a dam project comes over.

Director James Cameron said Monday that a real-life "Avatar" battle is playing out in Brazil's Amazon rain forest (the largest rain forest and most species rich tract of land), where indigenous groups are trying to halt the construction of a huge hydroelectric project.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Cameron said he was in Brazil's capital to support Indian and environmental groups as they stage protests against the Belo Monte dam project.
"I'm drawn into a situation where a real-life 'Avatar' confrontation is in progress," Cameron said in a telephone interview while en route to protests taking place in front of the Mines and Energy Ministry.
"What's happening in 'Avatar' is happening in Brazil and places like India and China, where traditional villages are displaced by big infrastructure projects," he added.
The $11 billion Belo Monte hydroelectric dam — which if completed would be the world's third-largest such project — was cleared for construction Feb. 1 by the Environment Ministry. Bidding for prospective builders is expected to take place later this month.
Brazil's government has said that even if it can't find private partners for the dam's construction on the Xingu River, which feeds the Amazon River, the nation has the funds to finish the project itself.
The administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva argues that the dam will provide clean energy and is needed to meet current and future energy needs.
Environmentalists are sharply opposed. They say it will devastate wildlife and the livelihoods of 40,000 people who live in the area to be flooded. They also argue that the energy generated by the dam will largely go to big mining operations in the Amazon, not benefit the average person. - from yahoo
Yup, not to benefit the average person but only their pockets, hope these guys will think this through, what will happen to our earth?

We are bringing upon ourselves our very own extinction. We our inflicting a punishment to this Earth that it does not
.even deserve. We have long been cared for our home yet we repay it with its own destruction.
